Overview

Decentraland is one of the first titles to see a lot of mainstream traction thanks to their proactive approach to draw the attention of traditional institutions into setting up their digital HQs in their metaverse. The game allows for players to enjoy a virtual experience that can include anything from attending concerts for your favorite artists to gambling in massive digital casinos.

A major aspect of Decetraland is how its entire world is split into small pieces of land.  Landowners control what content is published to their portion of land, which is identified by a set of cartesian coordinates (x,y). Contents can range from static 3D scenes to interactive systems such as games.

LAND and Its Use Cases

The utility of LAND is based on its adjacency to other attention hubs, its ability to host applications, and also as an identity mechanism. Developers and other content creators will demand LAND so that they can build on top of it and reach their target audience. Although every unclaimed LAND can be purchased at the same exchange rate (1000 MANA = 1 LAND), LAND parcels are distinguishable from each other, potentially trading at different prices on a secondary market due to differences in adjacencies and traffic.

This freedom of creativity manages to breed tremendous experiences and this is where Decentraland shines. Decentral Games is primary example of what can be done inside the game. It managed to garner massive amounts of success through building a collection of casinos where players can enter and play countless games that get updated and expanded upon every now and then in exchange for winning items and competition prizes.

Recent Updates 

Decentraland recently celebrated its 4th anniversary with a look back into their recent key updates like social sign-in implementation, and multichain asset purchases. Decentraland is also maintaining its tradition of hosting seasonal festivals (like Decentaland Fashion Week and Music festivals). In 2024, the focus is on enhancing the user experience with a new Desktop Client for better immersion, simplifying access for newcomers with improved onboarding and language support, and creating engaging content with themes like Wellness and Music. Efforts to grow the community include the Decentraland Ambassador Program and the first Community Summit in Argentina, all aiming to build a more accessible, engaging, and community-focused platform.

How to Get Started

Those interested can directly download the client from the website, and wander around as they wish exploring the world. However, some experiences cost MANA or other tokens to enter. If you wish to build your own park, or anything else for that matter, you need to own land. You can browse the listed land for sale through Decentraland's marketplace.

MANA,a token circulating in decentraland,is designed to make the virtual world function well.It is a replaceable ERC20 coin with a fixed supply of 2,193,795,827.It can be used to buy land,virtual products and services.MANA is also utilized to encourage content production and user adoption.

As a fully decentralised virtual world,decentraland use the DAO to govern the world.The community will propose and vote on policy revisions,such as future LAND auctions,whitelisting of NFT contracts,etc.Votings are held on DAO’s governance portal,powered by Aragon.
